NEWS| Tata Realty eyes hospitality

Tata Realty and Infrastructure (TRIL), of which Krishna Kumar is the chairman, is in the middle of creating a new business vertical that will focus on the hospitality business.

Translated, TRIL will get into the hotel business. How that will eventually work for the Tata group, which owns both companies, is still unclear.

A source close to the development said: "It is too early to comment on the business model. We are yet to finalise the strategy." In the meantime, TRIL has appointed B Suman, an industry veteran who has spend many years with Kerala Tourism, to head the division.

TRIL was recently set up by Tata Sons, the Tata group's holding company. Its original mandate was to invest in the booming real estate and infrastructure space. But, point out analysts, the hospitality business in India has never had it so good.

Average room rates are growing at over 50%, with the highest appreciation coming in from Bangalore. That is why hospitality is hot with private equity funds. For instance, New York-based Citigroup Property Investors have partnered with Nitesh Estates for developing a $100 million, 250 room luxury hotel in Bangalore.

Recently, Carlson Hotels announced that it has entered into a strategic alliance with the Lotus Hotel Investment Fund—a new $1 billion private equity fund—which is being set up to target hotel development opportunities in high-growth markets across the region including China, India, Thailand and Vietnam. These variables, analysts say, may have compelled TRIL to look at the sector more closely.

The way things are panning out right now, TRIL has plans to develop properties across the country. There is a chance though, hospitality sector analysts point out, that because TRIL does not have the expertise in managing properties, it may give the management contract to Taj hotels.

As for IHCL itself, Krishna Kumar is building its portfolio aggressively by way of acquiring properties and executing management service contracts in the domestic and international market. IHCL was in the news recently for buying a 10% stake in luxury hotel operator Orient Express Hotels.

NEWS| DLF buys the luxury Amanresorts

AmanresortsIn a takeover, which would clearly signify the intentions of DLF and its plans in the hospitality business, India’s largest real estate developer has bagged the Singapore based luxury hotel chain, Amanresorts.

Amanresorts has a unique portfolio as it owns 18 luxury resorts worldwide but each of them are small in size and have a beautiful location coupled with exclusivity. In the latest Zagat Survey, the group was ranked number one in the category of World’s Top Hotels, Resorts and Spas.

The deal has been reportedly struck for $250million (around Rs.1000 crore). Along with this DLF will also assume debt of $220 million which would be paid off from the future revenues of Aman resorts.

In India, Amaresorts has 2 properties in Rajasthan while the third one is coming up in Delhi at Lodhi Road. The latter property was bought from ITDC and is now being built as a super luxury resort and would have the most expensive room tariff in India.

Amanresorts caters primarily to the rich and famous as it has an exclusivity of its own. Post takeover, the brand name Aman would continue to exist while its current majority shareholder and founder would exit the company.

The deal would transform DLF into a company with a wider portfolio, it would also help it to compete against other Indian luxury hotel chains such as Oberoi, Taj and ITC. via

Editor: How long before we see DLF becoming the largest Indian Hotel Chain? Remember they have 75 hotels coming up. Ofcourse those are Hiltons, but could a DLF brand be getting prepared in the wings?
