INNOVATION| Chandigarh to Promote Wedding Tourism

In a bid to promote the city as the most preferred destination for tourists in north India, Chandigarh Tourism has come up with some innovative concepts like wedding tourism.
The city administration would also promote sports and medical tourism in a big way to attract tourists and in the adjoining areas, Home Secretary Krishna Mohan said here in a statement.

Weddings in north India are grand occasions and Chandigarh is particularly known for its glamourous and graceful wedding ceremonies. They provide a lot of entertainment value to foreign tourists especially Europeans who relish such occasions, Mohan said.

The tourism department is in the process of facilitating foreign visitors, who wish to attend such wedding ceremonies here, by collaborating with various hotels and resorts.

The department is participating in the World Travel Market (WTM) at London. The WTM provides an opportunity for the whole global travel trade industry to meet, network, negotiate, conduct business and stay abreast with the latest developments in the travel industry, the statement said.

The ‘City Beautiful´, as it is fondly called, was placed on tentative list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO recently, thereby becoming India’s first such city.

The official emphasised that the union territory is now also becoming popular as a major tourist destination, as it not only lies close to New Delhi but also provides a gateway to the Himalayas.
Sports Tourism, which including gams like golf, cricket and tennis, is also becoming popular here.
Visitors can try out their skills at easily accessible golf facilities particularly at Chandigarh Golf Club, Chandigarh Golf Association Range and the Panchkula Golf Club, Mohan added.

Medical Tourism is also flourishing with local hospitals have already been granted Joint Commission International (JCI) certification, enabling foreign tourists to claim insurance, while being treated in these state-of-the-art hospitals, he said.
