stop and decide what their best course of action will be to make sure they are able to fulfill a guest’s request and/or complete a specific job task within a limited time. Their immediate or non-immediate actions toward guests—since guest interaction will be the primary focus of the game— will directly affect the mood of the guest as well as the hotel’s SALT (Satisfaction and Loyalty Tracking) scores.

SALT is the real world survey tool used by the brand to measure and track guest loyalty, satisfaction and their overall experience at a particular Hilton Garden Inn hotel as well as thoughts on the brand in general. Surveys are sent via email to guests who have recently stayed at a hotel and the results of the surveys generate the SALT scores. Each survey asks the guest to rank their satisfaction on a variety of amenities and the aspects of their stay. The ranking scale is from 1 to 10 with 10 being the highest.

“We’re excited to introduce a game-based program to enhance training for team members as well as make it fun and I want to acknowledge David Kervella who oversees the training programs for Hilton Garden Inn for spearheading and researching this capability,” said Adrian Kurre, senior vice president, Hilton Garden Inn. “Ultimate Team Play allows our hotel team members to play their hotel specific role and show them how their various actions directly affect the guest and the hotel. Including SALT was key because it really emphasizes to the entire team that no matter what role they have or what job they do, each person ultimately affects the guest’s overall hotel experience.”

Ultimate Team Play uses a branching dialogue system so team members will select their level of guest interaction from a list to best determine which response best suits each guest’s demeanor and attitude while ensuring they are also completing their specific hotel duties (i.e., answering the telephone, checking guests in and out and interacting with guests in lobby) as efficiently as possible. Because guests already have their own set of values with varying degrees of anger and patience levels and flexibility, scoring will be based on the guest’s happiness, how quickly, politely and correctly the team member performs.

“We are excited to use our advanced learning expertise, technology and artistic talent to help Hilton Garden Inn create the first interactive training game to be used in the hospitality industry,” said Virtual Heroes founder and CEO Jerry Heneghan. “Ultimate Team Play leverages cutting-edge games-based technology in a realistic and immersive virtual Hilton Garden Inn environment where real-world hotel staff can further enhance their training and guest interaction.”

The overall goal of the Ultimate Team Play is to show hotel team members how their actions impact the hotel, affect the guest’s mood which in turn moves the SALT scores up or down.

Ultimate Team Play will be the fourth component in the Hilton Garden Inn team member training program which includes:

• Orientation – introduction to the Hilton Family of Hotels, the Hilton Garden Inn brand and their specific hotel

• Ultimate Skills – understanding and learning job specific skills using a magazine-style training manual

• Ultimate Service – DVD based-training modules that takes Ultimate Skills to the next level and provides team members with examples on how to deliver exemplary customer service

• Ultimate Team Play – interactive game based training placing team members in a virtual Hilton Garden Inn hotel that shows how their actions affect guests and overall SALT scores

Orientation, Ultimate Skills and Ultimate Service training are required to be completed within 90 days of hire.

The initial interactive game will be beta-tested in select HGI locations in which team members will play the role of a front desk service agent. The full interactive game version set to launch to all Hilton Garden Inn locations in January 2009 will include positions in housekeeping, food and beverage, engineering/maintenance as well as front desk.

Westin Mumbai Garden city will be a 269 room business hotel in Mumbai

the Mumbai suburb of Goregaon. This marks the entry of the Westin Hotels & Resorts owned by US-based Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc to Mumbai.

The Westin Mumbai Garden City will constitute the hotel component of Commerz, a mixed use commercial tower. It is located off the Western Express Highway at Goregaon (East). As one of the first five star hotels in this area, it is also expected to cater to the 80 acres of the integrated township of Oberoi Garden City. This business hotel will occupy multi levels of the 32 storey tower and would be operational for business in 2009.

Commenting on the potential of a star hotel in the western suburbs, Oberoi said, “There has been a gradual shift of commercial activity to the western suburbs with well connected infrastructure and modern housing facilities. In view of this, we foresee a big demand for five star hospitality services in the area. Besides, Oberoi Garden City will house leading multinational companies, which will directly benefit.”

Commerz will manage the commercial space and the hotel through separate entrances. The hotel and commercial floors will have a separate set of lifts. The ground level of the tower will house a restaurant as well as banquet rooms. The 18th floor will house the rest of the restaurants and a bar with an atrium that opens right up from the 18th floor to the 32nd floor. The 269 room hotel will be located from the 19th to the 32nd floors. The hotel will also feature a Westin Heavenly Spa, Westin WORKOUT and a business center.

NEWS| hotel had caught fire, is now on its road to recovery

The Grand New Delhi at Vasant Kunj, which confirmed in its statement that certain areas of its hotel had caught fire, is now on its road to recovery. According to the hotel’s statement, guests staying in the hotel have been evacuated safely.

Ray Mc Shane, General Manager, The Grand New Delhi, says...

"It was an unfortunate incident. Our 'Crisis & Emergency Team' has ensured the safe and speedy evacuation of all guests and staff. We are thankful to the fire and police departments and concerned authorities who helped us cope with the situation." According to McShane, many hotels and industry colleagues came forward to help the hotel and the guests were patient and understanding.

The 182 safely evacuated guests of the hotel were transferred to The Hyatt Regency and Shangri-la. They were given custody of their luggage and personal belongings through the night and the next morning.

Though the exact extent of the damage has not yet been ascertained, public areas such as the lobby, Enoki, Caraway, Cascades Lounge, The Grand Café, The Gourmet Shop and Whiskey Bar outlets have been affected. The fire outbreak caused damage to some additional back areas of the hotel, including the kitchens and the banquet areas. The smoke and soot has affected significant areas like the guest rooms.

According to The Grand New Delhi authorities, all necessary steps were taken to ensure the guests’ well being. All the guests are safe and the hotel is in constant touch with them. The hotel has been cordoned off to ensure safety and security.

NEWS| Wadhwa Developers to introduce five star hotel in Mumbai suburb

Marriott on the prospective list for a tie-up

Wadhwa Developers, the Mumbai-based real estate firm is in the process of introducing a five star property at Borivali in suburban Mumbai. The group owns and operates a recreational club, Club Aquaria, which will undergo a facelift.

Speaking about the same project, sources from the Marriott International Inc have revealed that the group has shown keen interest in the development. A tie-up with the real estate developer under a management contract is under consideration.

Club Aquaria, which started operations in 1992, is housed in a five acre land. “The reason the group found it essential for redeveloping the property was that we aimed to provide five star facilities to our guests when we started off in early 1990s. But those standards are outgrown today,” adds Ganguli.

The project is presently under the planning stage and is expected to soon undergo construction. It is slated to be ready by end 2010.

Beside the hotel, the group will also develop a club house with exclusive memberships. It also plans to make the redeveloped property’s facilities available to the present members. It might also consider merging the membership offerings with the loyalty programmes of the managing hotel chain. However, Ganguli states that it is too premature to confirm the same.

The project will be the first five-star hotel in that area of Mumbai. With the growing land rates in the city, most developers are now looking at constructing properties in the extended Mumbai suburbs.
