NEWS| Intl| Starwood's growth accelerates: 900th hotel

Early this year Starwood will mark a milestone with the opening of its 900th hotel and expects to increase its portfolio by 50% over the next five years, driven by aggressive global expansion across all its brands and the unprecedented growth of its two new brands, Aloft and Element, which both expect to open their first hotels this year.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. anticipates ...another year of extraordinary growth in 2008, building on the company's record-setting success in 2007.

Starwood's active pipeline includes 500 hotels and 120,000 rooms. Approximately half of Starwood's new hotels are expected to open outside of North America, reflecting the company's impressive growth in dynamic international markets. The global hotel giant expects to add 80 - 100 hotels to its portfolio this year, up more than 50% from the number it opened in 2007.

NEWS| 6 Marriotts: Norway & Sweden

By 2010 Marriot plans to open six new hotels in Scandinavia, representing three brands.

The first six hotels in agreement with Scandinavian Hospitality Group are to be located in Oslo, Kristiansund, Stockholm, Malmoe and ski resorts in Trysil and Hemsedal.

The Marriott International lodging presence in Norway and Sweden will include six hotels by 2010, representing three brands, giving travelers a choice of accommodations at varying price points and offering distinctly different travel experiences.

The hotels are being developed under a recently announced multiple franchise agreement with Scandinavian Hospitality Group (SHG).

Included are the following hotels representing Marriott’s upscale, deluxe Marriott and Renaissance brands and its upper moderately priced Courtyard by Marriott brand:

• 300-room Oslo International Airport Marriott Hotel, Norway (2009)

• 120-room Renaissance Malmoe Hotel located in the heart of Malmoe, Sweden (2009)

• 280-unit Trysill Marriott Ski Resort, Norway (2010)

NEWS| Marriott's Indian expansion

Kolkata, Chandigarh, and Hyderabad are the destinations of the three new hotels - this brings the total number of groupo properties in India to 25, representing six brands and 6,224 rooms, by 2011.

Three more hotels will join Marriott International’s rapidly expanding hotel portfolio in India, all three of these hotels will be operated by Marriott under long-term management contracts.

The three new hotels are:

KNOW| 5 new restaurants to the UK each day

Amongst these new start-ups, ethnic restaurants continue to be the most popular type of new establishment - in addition research suggests that the UK is leaving behind its takeaway culture.

Five new restaurants opened for business every day in 2007.

The number of new restaurants opening...


in 2007 exceeded the number of take away food outlets that also started out in business ( 1803 restaurants compared to 1701 take-aways ).

This indicates that the UK may be starting to move away from its reputation as a ‘takeaway culture’.

Amongst these new start-ups, ethnic restaurants continued to be the most popular type of new establishment.

Indian and Chinese restaurants were the first and second most popular type of restaurant to open, collectively accounting for over 25% of all openings.

NEWS| INtl| First Doubletree in UK.

This project will see the highly regarded Cambridge Garden House Hotel converted to an upscale, full-service Doubletree consisting of 122 guest rooms.

The hotel is expected to be complete and open to the public as the Doubletree by Hilton Cambridge - Garden House by 2nd April 2008.

Doubletree by Hilton hotel, to be located in Cambridge, was signed today - representing another major step toward Hilton Hotels Corporation's target of doubling the current portfolio of hotels in the UK and Ireland from 75 to 150 over the next five years.

Hilton Hotels Corporation and its subsidiaries will manage the hotel under the Doubletree by Hilton brand and Ability Hotels (Cambridge) Ltd., a member of The Ability Group, will own the hotel.
