NEWS| DLF plans to build 125 hotels in India

DLF Ltd plans to spend USD five billion to build 125 hotels in India, over the next seven years.

According to Rajiv Singh, Vice Chairman, DLF, the company will add 25,000 rooms (including 4,000 in the first three years) to India's portfolio.

"Today, there is tremendous opportunity in India, since there is a very large shortage of rooms," says Singh. India requires 100,000 rooms, but only 10,000-15,000 are developed every year.

We will cater to an older audience in the luxury market".

NEWS| Carlson to double Asia Pacific portfolio

CarlsonWithin the next three years there will be more than 50 new hotels across seven countries.

Carlson Hotels Worldwide, one of the world’s largest privately-owned hotel companies based in the U.S, will double its Asia Pacific portfolio.

The company currently has 9,383 rooms under development within its five brands – Regent Hotels & Resorts, Radisson Hotels & Resorts, Park Plaza Hotels & Resorts, Country Inns & Suites By Carlson and Park Inn- in fast growing Asia Pacific markets including China, India, Thailand and the Philippines.

In China, Carlson will open 10 new hotels through a strategic partnership with the Sunshine100 Group, one of the country’s top property developers. Plans were recently announced for a new Radisson hotel in the city of Liuzhou, the first of several new projects that will bring Carlson’s core brand to China’s second and third tier cities.

NEWS| 'Courtyard by Marriott' heads for Mumbai

The property will open at end 2009

Marriott International Inc plans to launch its ‘Courtyard by Marriott' brand in Mumbai, by the third quarter of 2009. The property is owned by Kanakia Hospitality Pvt Ltd and will be managed by Marriott International Inc.

The 300 room property will be located near the Andheri-Kurla Road, which is in close proximity to the international and domestic airports. The property will have two restaurants, recreation facilities, a spa, a swimming pool and a business centre. "Since it's a moderately priced brand, 'Courtyard by Marriott' is one of our fast growing brands. With its select services, the brand caters to business travellers and is extremely successful in major cities," says Rajeev Menon, Area Vice President, Malaysia, India, Pakistan & Maldives, Marriott International Inc.

NEWS| IBOM to open Hyderabad branch

Institute of Bar Operations & Management (IBOM), the New Delhi-based bartending school managed by designundesign (a Sandy Verma brand), plans to open another branch in Hyderabad. The institute will commence operations from July 2008.

According to Rohan Jelkie, Manager, IBOM, the institute will be located at Banjara Hills in Hyderabad, close to Taj Hotels. Jelkie says that the institute will be run by a local franchisee, under the core team's direct supervision. IBOM plans to open branches other major cities, as well.

NEWS| United Spirits launches 'Spiritz & More'

Retail outlet brand will open in 15 cities, shortly.

United Spirits has launched its retail liquor outlet brand, 'Spiritz & More', in Bengaluru. It has plans to open 15 outlets at various Indian locations over the next few months. The company will also roll out another 50 stores by the end of 2008.

"We chose to have the first store in Bengaluru as the city is the home to modern trade format. Subsequently, we have plans to open such outlets across India — including metros, tier I and tier II cities. Our intention is to have pan-India presence," says Anant Iyer, Head - Trade Marketing & Institutional Sales, United Spirits Limited. The outlet will have a spirits advisor who will assist customers to choose from the array of displayed liquors.
