NEWS| Taj GVK to invest Rs 500 crore for expansion

Taj GVK Hotels & Resorts will make investments worth over Rs 500 crore in its existing and new properties in south India over the next two─three years.

It is set to open the 200─room Taj Mount Road in Chennai next month while work on a new five─star property in Hyderabad is in progress. The property is slated to open by
end 2009. Moreover, the company is also setting up 45 service apartments on a 2.5 acre property right next to the Taj Krishna at a cost of Rs 150 crore.

The company currently operates three properties in the city and one in Chandigarh. It also proposes to add more rooms to the Taj Deccan, and bring the total to 123 over the next three years, at a cost of Rs 150 crore. The hotel group also plans to set up hotels in Bengaluru, Kodaikanal, Jaipur and Amritsar over the next few years.

EDUCATION| Kenilworth Group ties─up with University College of Gastronomy, Sweden

The Kenilworth Group of Hotels has tied up with University College of Gastronomy, Sweden to establish eastern India's first ever bartending school in Kolkata. Amidst the severe dearth of skilled manpower in the hospitality industry, especially in eastern India, the Kenilworth Academy of Bar Management is expected to contribute to the need of quality professionals as well as to support the growing number of premium, mid─level and budget hotels. The University College of Gastronomy, Sweden will suggest the curriculum and lend their expertise to run the school.

The Kenilworth Academy of Bar Management is going to start with 30 students in its first session. Raju Bharat, Managing Director, Kenilworth Group, says, “Bartending is an art which requires a special set of skills. The curriculum taught in most of the premium hotel management schools in India is not satisfactory enough to impart knowledge of drinks and the art of serving them. A lot of speciality bars are coming up and we need a good number of ace bartenders.”

NEWS| Hilton Hotels’ Koos Klein named Asia Pacific Hotelier of 2007

Singapore | Koos Klein, President, Hilton Hotels – Asia Pacific, has been named “Asia Pacific Hotelier of the Year 2007” at the 11th Asia Pacific Hotel Investment Conference, organised and hosted by Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels.

The ninth recipient to receive the prestigious award, Mr Klein has spent an illustrious 16 years of his 27-year career in Asia Pacific. Since his appointment as President, Hilton Hotels - Asia Pacific in 1997, Mr Klein has spearheaded dynamic growth of the world’s most famous hotel brand, from 25 hotels to 60 today. He was responsible for realigning the Hilton portfolio, and did this by setting the bar high for new Hilton hotels and evaluating existing hotels against stringent brand standards. He has also overseen the company’s strong financial performance with Hilton’s revenue in Asia Pacific having doubled and profits quadrupled over the past decade.

Koos Klein was born and raised in the Netherlands. After graduating from Hotel Management School at Maastricht, he embarked on career in the hotel business by joining the Holiday Inn group in the Netherlands. Mr Klein then joined Accor and was transferred to Australia in 1990 as General Manager of Accor’s first hotel in Australia, the Novotel Sydney at Darling Harbour. Following this, he was appointed in a regional capacity, responsible for Accor’s rapidly growing hotel operations in Australia, New Zealand and Japan. Between 1990 and 1996, under Koos’s leadership, Accor's presence in these regions grew from 1 hotel to 55. He returned to Europe where he headed the Novotel Central Europe organization until 1998, when Mr Klein took on the role with Hilton Hotels as President of Asia Pacific.
