NEWS| Yum! Brands profit declines as China sales slow

Net income declined to $204 million, or 43 cents a diluted share, from $231 million, or 44 cents, a year earlier. Sales rose 3.7 per cent to $3.38 billion, the Louisville, Kentucky- based company said in a statement.




The global recession is curbing revenue in China, which accounts for about a third of Yum’s sales. Chief executive officer David Novak opened 504 stores there last year, out of a total of 1,495 new overseas locations.

Sales in stores in Mainland China open at least a year rose 1 per cent in the quarter, compared with 17 per cent a year earlier. System-wide sales in the China division, which includes Taiwan and Thailand, rose 23 per cent.




In December, Novak, forecast profit growth of 15 to 20 per cent this year in its China division and 15 per cent in the US. Meanwhile, Yum plans to open another 1,400 locations outside the US in 2009.

Novak is relying on international expansion to maintain profit as sales in the US slow amid mounting job losses, declining home values and tighter lending restrictions.

TRENDS| Dubai becoming a hub for cruise tourism

Dubai is fast becoming a hub for cruise tourism as cruise tourist arrivals in the Emirate is expected to grow over 75 per cent to 200,000 this year.




Cruise tourists have grown dramatically since European operator Costa Crociere began using Dubai as hub for cruises, also covering Abu Dhabi, Muscat and Bahrain.

"We expect the number of cruise tourists to exceed 200,000 in 2008," said Hamad Mohammad Bin Majren, Executive Director of business development at Dubai's Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), aboard the AIDAdiva cruise ship.




The ship, which can carry 646 crew and 2,500 passengers, has begun its new winter schedule out of Dubai and will make 18 port calls between December 4 and April 9. Another Costa vessel, the 2,394-passenger capacity ship Costa Victoria, also called at Dubai.

The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts is proud to announce the appointment of Mr. Vella Ramasawmy as General Manager, The Leela Kempinski , Gurgaon, Delhi (N.C.R). His last assignment was with Kempinski Hotel Khao Lak, Thailand as General Manager and Head of Operations.



In his new role, he will be responsible for the operational set- up and over-all management of the hotel. He will also oversee the strengthening of Group’s presence in the northern region.

His key assignments include signature properties of Hyatt including the Grand Hyatt Muscat and Park Hyatt properties in Goa, Melbourne and Sydney. He has also managed the renowned properties - Le Touessrok Ile aux Cerfs and Le Saint Geran in Mauritius.



Having successfully directed hotel development, product enhancement, up-gradation and concept development, he brings profitable and practical expertise of managing world-class hotels. He is recognized for his exemplary achievements, unrelenting commitment to his role and leadership qualities. His appointment continues to support the new strategic direction of the Group’s growth and expansion plans.

Hotel LeelaVenture Ltd. owns and operates The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts in Mumbai, Bangalore, Goa and Kovalam (Kerala). NEWS| Starwood to open its 1000th hotel

The milestone comes as part of the company's plan to open 100 hotels this year in diverse markets throughout the world.




Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. has announced on the American Lodging Investment Summit in San Diego, that it will open its 1000th hotel in 2009.

Capital Gate in Abu Dhabi is set to enter the Guinness Book of Records as the 'world's most inclined tower, it will lean 4 times as far as Leaning Tower of Pisa.





Capital Gate will accommodate the 5-star Hyatt at Capital Centre hotel and will provide the most exclusive office space in Abu Dhabi. The tower forms a major part of the Capital Centre development, a $2.2 billion business and residential micro city being constructed around the thriving Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre.





The new 200 room, 5-star hotel to be operated by Hyatt International will open in late 2009 and will be the first Hyatt operated hotel in the UAE capital. In recognition of its significance and its stature, Hyatt International has named the hotel 'Hyatt at Capital Centre'.
