TRENDS| Average hotel room price drops 17 pct in first half of 2009

he average price of a hotel room worldwide dropped 17 percent in the first six months of 2009 over last year, according to a Hotels.com Hotel Price Index.

The drop in the average was driven by drops on all continents. In North America, prices were down 17 percent. Prices in Europe fell 16 percent.

The index tracks prices paid by customers of 78,000 hotels at 13,000 locations around the world.

VIEWS| Leela Aims to Unseat Rivals as Top Luxury Hotel Chain in India

some highlights:

Leela plans to open another five properties by 2012 in India's destination cities, including the academic center of Pune, and Agra, a tourist magnet that features the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort.

Leela has no plans to expand beyond India

The 260-room Leela Palace New Delhi will open next fall in the city's diplomatic enclave. Construction cost will be about US $1 million a room, including more than US $500,000 per room in land costs alone.

NEWS| Economy Hotel Ibis Debuts In Pune

Ibis, the international economy hotel brand of Accor is all set to open its welcoming doors to the chirpy city of Pune starting October 1 and is located in the prominent Nagar Road artery, which is just five minutes from the Pune International Airport.

NEWS| Barista to invest Rs 40 crore

he company also intends to invest close to Rs 40 crore, raised through internal accruals, in setting up 100 new outlets every year. Currently, Barista has 230 outlets in India. Barista and Cafe Coffee Day (CCD) together controls 85 per cent of the Rs 400 crore organised coffee retailing market. While Barista holds close to 20-25 per cent of the market, the remaining is dominated by CCD.
