NEWS| Starwood sues Hilton Hotels over alleged corporate espionage

Hotel giant Starwood Hotels late tonight filed suit against rival Hilton Hotels, accusing it of stealing trade secrets to help it launch a rival luxury chain quickly and cheaply.

Filed in federal court in New York, Starwood's suit alleges that Hilton stole more than 100,000 electronic and hard copy files containing trade secrets to help it expand its luxury hotel offerings. "The large volume of confidential information taken is extraordinary," the filing says.

Hilton last month announced the launch of Denizen, a chic, upscale chain that would rival Starwood's offerings. The brains behind Denizen include two executives who until last year ran Starwood's luxury hotels unit.

Among other things, Starwood asks the court to prevent Hilton from launching Denizen.

Dubai's Oct Hotel Room Rates Top World List

The average rate for a single night in a Dubai hotel was $226, a figure only matched by hotels in New York, the Hotels.com-Relaxnews Hotel Price Barometer said.

Dubai was also one of only two holiday destinations out of 30 surveyed which showed a month-on-month increase in room rates.

The emirate's hotels showed a 10 percent rise compared to September while Rio de Janeiro room rates rose by three percent.

However, compared to room rates in October 2008, Dubai hotels were still 30 percent cheaper, the index, cited by the UK's Independent, added.

TECH | Virtual events Won’t Replace Face-to-Face

According to Eventia and the Institute of Travel and Meetings, Virtual events Won’t Replace Face-to-Face meetings.

I do not agree.

The following are the key findings:
>registration and joining instructions scored 11% higher for the live event than for the virtual.

>Speaker feedback was also consistently better, with scores averaging 9% higher for the real life event.

>However, ease of interaction with delegates and speakers was scored higher in the virtual conference, by 2% and 10% respectively.

I think the registration & joining will become a snap in the days to come and I can virtually guarantee the speaker feedback will improve with better virtual experience.

Here is how I see it playing out.

Virtual events that are meant for learning and need to capture a larger audience will become virtual. face-to-face will become a more expensive and exclusive affair and will be essentially for business networking and cracking deals.

What do you think?

Also how ready are you to take advantage of this as hoteliers? What if you could hold a smaller group event at the exact time the international event is taking place. Assist everyone in the registration process (the one parameter that scores low), encourage face-to-face interaction among the local group!
