INTL| Holiday Inn gives ultimatum to 300 inferior hotels: Renovate or lose brand

Holiday Inn's prepared to kicked out as many as 300 hotels unless their owners move ahead with the chain's massive improvement plan by Feb. 1.

At IHG's annual U.S. convention for hotel owners yesterday, Holiday Inn brand chief Kevin Kowalski told the audience of roughly 2,000 hotel franchisees that despite the recession, most Holiday Inn hotels have either completed their upgrades or have at least committed to making the changes. But the owners of 300 hotels, or 12% of the chain's 3,300 locations, haven't yet moved ahead even though Holiday Inn has given them a deadline of Feb. 1.

To earn the new, streamlined "Holiday Inn" sign, owners have to agree to buy new bedding, pillows and towels; renovate the lobby; pipe in hip, modern music from an approved playlist, install green uplighting on the exterior and make other improvements. The $1 billion, global makeover is aimed at reviving the iconic Holiday Inn brand and luring more business travelers.

"We have 300 hotels to worry about at this point," Kowalski told the audience, though he didn't name specific hotel locations. "If you're in the minority 12% that haven't committed yet, step up and do it. If you have a quality problem, fix it...We're not changing timing.

NEWS| Thai Minor plans $120 mln expansion in 2010

Thai luxury hotel group Minor International Pcl (MINT.BK), operator of the Four Seasons and Marriott hotels in Thailand, plans a 4 billion baht ($120 million) expansion next year, a senior official said on Tuesday.

Minor, which also runs Burger King and Dairy Queen fast-food franchises in Thailand, expects earnings to rise in the fourth quarter from the previous quarter as a recovery in tousism boosts revenues, said finance chief Pratana Mongkolkul.

"We will invest on food outlet expansions and new hotels next year. Our revenue next year will increase from both existing and new food outlets. The hotel business will also improve next year," she told reporters..

Minor's average hotel occupancy rate would rise to 60 percent in the fourth quarter, helped by lower room rates, before climbing further to 65 percent next year, up from a projected average of 53 percent in 2009, she said.

It is targeting at least 10 percent revenue growth next year, underpinned by property sales and plans to open 80-100 new food outlets from a total of 1,100 now, she said.

Tata group company, Indian Hotels Company, today posted a 76.56 per cent decline in profit after tax (PAT) at Rs 11.87 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2009 on account of slowdown in travel trade.

he total income of the company, however, decreased to Rs 329.69 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2009, from Rs 399.44 crore a year ago, the company said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
