NEWS| Marriott to shuffle its holdings

The luxury Ritz-Carlton hotel chain will cease to be a stand-alone division under the Marriott International umbrella as part of a reorganization that the Bethesda-based company plans to complete by 2011.

Marriott, the largest hotelier in the United States, until now has kept a firewall between its eponymous chain of mid-priced hotels and Ritz-Carlton, which is the company's high-end attraction.

Company executives have said over the past few weeks that it was reorganizing into four units divided along geographic lines -- the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Asia -- each with its own president and resources.

Marriott's current divisions are U.S. and Canadian operations, global timeshare, international and Ritz-Carlton. Global timeshare will continue to be outside the four regional units.

Marriott spokesman Tom Marder said Wednesday that the restructuring "enhances operations and connections to customers."

NEW HOTELS| Premier Inn set to open first hotel in Bangalore

Premier Inn, the UK's largest hotel chain, is popular among international travellers as a budget hotel. But in India, where it will open its first hotel in Bangalore early next month, Premier Inn is pitching itself as a value-for-money mid-market brand.

"In India we realised that the consumers' connotation of a budget hotel means something that might not offer quality. So we decided to term ourselves as value for money mid-market hotel brand," says Aly Shariff, managing director of Premier Inn, which plans to build 80 hotels across the country for an investment of £300 million.

Bangalore may face oversupply of luxury rooms

This is one luxury Bangalore can afford not to have. The city is set to add the highest number of “keys” in the upscale rooms category at a time when demand is not so certain.

Bangalore is set to add a record 5,866 upscale rooms over the next two years, which would almost double the existing base of 3,200 rooms.

Upcoming luxury projects include one from Prestige Group, which is in partnership with Marriott International and Hilton Hotels. Nitesh Estates is building a property for Ritz Carlton while Brigade Group is putting one up for The Sheraton.

Industry analysts, however, fear an oversupply in the market.

“We believe Bangalore is currently flirting with the danger of oversupply in the luxury and first class space,” says Manav Thadani, managing director of HVS-India, a consulting, valuation and research company tracking the hospitality industry.

The fears are not unfounded.

While the city was a five- and seven-star hotel’s dream location when the IT and ITeS sectors were booming, th…
