Accor opens 10th hotel in Mexico

Mexico City -- Accor opened its 10th hotel in Mexico – the ibis Hermosillo. This achievement extends the network to a total of more than 1,400 rooms in the country, including two Novotel brand hotels (Mexico City and Monterrey) and eight units under the economy hotel brand ibis in Mexico City, Monterrey (2), Guadalajara, Aguascalientes, Merida, Chihuahua, and most recently, Hermosillo.

Accor started its operations in Mexico in 2002. The Group in Mexico has been largely recognized by the development of ibis brand hotels that offer the best value for money in all locations, consistent with the growing demand in the country for low-cost hotels with services of international quality required by the frequent travelers, including 24/7 food service in all its units.

"In Mexico, as in other countries, we have identified a particular growth potential for economy class hotels in major cities with a high number of business travelers," said Michael Flaxman, COO of Accor for the Americas.

The company also has two Novotel locations in Mexico: Mexico City-Santa Fe and Monterrey-Valle.

"Opening our 10th hotel in Mexico represents the acceptance and trust of our guests in Accor products and services, as well as the credibility and confidence of our partners in the country," said Jean-Philippe Claret, General Director of the company in Mexico.

In the past year, Accor has opened four hotels in Mexico as part of its long-term development plan and has currently three additional hotels under construction: ibis Ciudad Juarez Consulado (opening late 2010), ibis Cancun Centro (opening January 2011), and ibis San Luis Potosi (opening mid 2011) as well as one more unit under development in Mexico-Tlalnepantla.

London hotel unveils new Jimi Hendrix-themed suite

The new Hendrix-themed suite, which has been set up at the Cumberland Hotel off Park Lane, has a giant bed strewn with velvet cushions and zebra throws, the Sun reported.

The hotel is where Hendrix is said to have given his last ever interview, and the suite is being unveiled for a special public viewing next Saturday to mark the singer's death anniversary on September 18, 1970.

The fifth-floor suite overlooking Marble Arch also has on an iPod an hour-long recording of Hendrix talking to his music writer friend Keith Altham, 69, about reforming his band The Experience.

"Everybody should have a room where they get rid of all their releases. My room was a stage," Hendrix can be heard saying.

Altham advised Cumberland owners Guoman Hotels in designing their tribute suite.

A Hendrix-inspired Flying V guitar hangs on the wall alongside framed copies of NME articles, while a rainbow swirls giddily across the ceiling past a cascading light in the form of a human figure.

A mirror swings towards the bed, reflecting satin and sequins, a crimson carpet, orange curtains and, naturally, a haze of purple.

The Hendrix Suite at London's Cumberland hotel costs 399 pounds a night for two people, which includes a bottle of Hendrix's favourite Smokehead scotch and breakfast. (ANI)

Detroit hotels Hilton, Omni in distress

The 198-room hotel one block from Comerica Park and Ford Field will stay open, according to the lawsuit filed Thursday in Wayne County Circuit Court. The new owners are the original lenders of the $20 million loan on the property -- Wells Fargo and Capmark Financial Group. They now own the hotel through a Maryland limited liability company named after the hotel's 351 Gratiot Ave. address.

Attorneys for the new owners did not return calls late Thursday.

The lawsuit states the previous owner -- two companies listing the Ferchill Development Group's home office in Cleveland as their address -- defaulted on the $20 million loan in May. Ferchill executive Timm Judson is named as the main officer for both companies. John Ferchill, president and founder of the Ferchill Group, is listed as the guarantor of the defaulted $20 million loan taken out in 2007.

The Hilton Garden hotel opened in 2004. Its estimated cost at the time was $27.5 million.

When Ferchill was contacted late Thursday, he declined comment and referred calls to his lawyers, who couldn't be reached.

The lawsuit says the Ferchill team has an outstanding balance totaling $24.5 million on its loan, including fees and penalties. Wells Fargo and Capmark want the Ferchill officials to pay off the $5.5 million gap that the $19 million foreclosure sale price a week ago Thursday didn't cover, according to the lawsuit. The new owners also want a court-appointed receiver to oversee management of the hotel, which is still run by the Ferchill firms.

The Hilton Garden Inn isn't the only Detroit hotel in flux.

The Omni Detroit Hotel at River Place could close by mid-October if the current owners cannot finalize a sale by a potential buyer. Hotel officials have told state officials 76 workers at the Omni would lose their jobs.

Omni Hotels bought the River Place Inn in 1998, hoping to exploit its location on the Detroit River.

Sheraton Expands Footprint in China

Sheraton Hotels & Resorts is embarking on a wave of expansion in China, opening 8 hotels there by year's end, which brings its 2010 total to 11. It plans to add 26 more in the next four years, far beyond its average of 4 per year.

The class of 2010 includes the 490-room Sheraton Shanghai Hong Kou Hotel, which has five restaurants, a fitness center and an indoor pool. The hotel, which is to open on Nov. 1, is about a mile from Shanghai's historic Bund district. In the central business district of Guangzhou, China's third largest city, a 445-room Sheraton will adjoin a shopping mall and metro station.

While these hotels and new ones in Zhongshan, Tianjin, Wenzhou and Jiangyin seek to attract business travelers, a 342-room Sheraton Wuxi, which opened last month, is in a dining and entertainment district suitable for recreational travelers. The same is true of the 307-room Sheraton Shenzhou Peninsula Resort in Wanning, which is to open in December. It will have access to Hainan Island beaches.

Sanjeev Kapoor, BVB join hands to open restaurant chain

Celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor has joined hands with corporate multi-brand entity Better Value Brands (BVB) to launch a global chain of Indian restaurants, called 'Indii'. The Rs 100 crore joint venture plans to set up 70 Indii outlets (both franchise and company owned outlets) across the country, and aims to reach out to the Indian diaspora in different continents in the next 12 months. The first outlet, with a tentative size of 4,000 sq ft, will be opened in Mumbai.

"Around Rs 1.5 crore is required to open one such outlet," Harsha Bhatkal, director, Better Value Brands Limited said, adding, "We are about to open our first outlet in one of the high streets of Mumbai. We will enter tier II and III cities soon. Also, we plan to open Indii's outlets in the US, the UK and middle-east countries where we have a substantial Indian population."

Maintaining that Indii was a concept waiting to happen, Sanjeev Kapoor added, "Indian food offers a palate of flavours with aromas that travel far and wide.
