Sonoma State Alum Named Top Young Sommelier in the World

Ian Cauble, a Sonoma State alumnus who is currently the head sommelier for the Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay, was named "top young sommelier in the world" by French gastronomic society Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, based in Paris.

“Ian Cauble is an incredibly talented sommelier,” said Steven Holt, director of public relations for The Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay.

Cauble said it was Sonoma State's wine program that ignited his passion for food and spirits.

“I was especially hooked when I went on SSU’s wine class trip to Chile,” said Cauble, who majored in international business at the university with an emphasis in wine business and Spanish.

Upon graduation, Cauble took moved to Portugal where he worked for just two euros an hour at Royal Oporto in the Douro Valley, the country’s oldest port house, according to a spokesperson for Sonoma State University. He then traveled througout Europe, North Africa and India, exploring the wines and cuisines of these regions.
