Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has issued around 2,000 showcause notices to industries and hotels till tomorrow for operating without consent under the Water Act and Air Act, according to a TOI report. As per the GSPCB statistics, there are over 2,300 industrial units and over 2,500 hotels operating without consent under Water Act and Air Act. The GSPCB's move is based on the directions of the central pollution control board. The Comptroller and Auditor General ( CAG) of India had pointed out that hotels and industrial units were operating without water and air consent of the GSPCB, thereby causing a loss to the state exchequer. The board has issued showcause notices under Section 33 (a) read with Section 25/26 of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, and under Section 31(A) read with Section 21 of the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981. The notice reads that the hotels and industries concerned are required to "show-cause within 15 days from the date of receipt of this notice, as to why appropriate action as per the provision of the said acts should not be initiated against you for operating your unit without obtaining consent to operate as required under the said acts, thereby causing air and water pollution in the area."
