NEWS | Murrayfield House hotel opens in Edinburgh

A new boutique hotel, which can be booked in its entirety for up to 22 guests, has opened opposite Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh. Owned by the G1 Group - which also operates Central Hotel, Grassmarket Hotel and Bank Hotel - Murrayfield House has been designed by Jim Hamilton to create a homely ambience. Features include vintage furniture from India, light fittings from Holland and chairs from Paris, as well as bespoke handmade fixtures and fittings. NEWS | Starwood to expand in temple towns of India

Starwood Hotels and Resorts is lining up properties at leading temple towns such as Hairdwar, Varanasi and Tirupati, and is all set to finalize some deals by the end of the year. "It is a highly under-supplied market for people willing to spend and upgrade. Hence, we see a huge growth opportunity for some of Starwood brands like Sheraton and Four Points. We are talking with some local developers and hope to finalize a deal — either a management contract or franchise — in the next few months," Simon Turner, Starwood's president of global development told. Starwood is setting up a 180-room property, under the Sheraton brand, in Amritsar.

NEWS | Odisha to set up two more hotel management institutes

The Odisha government will set up two more State Institute for Hotel Management (SIHM) at Khallikote in Ganjam district for South Odisha and Balasore in North Odisha in the current financial year. The Food Crafts Institute in Balangir has already been upgraded as a State Institute of Hotel Management. This was informed by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who along with the Union Minister of State for Tourism K Chiranjeevi, inaugurated the new campus of Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management (IITTM) at Dumduma here on Thursday. IITTM initially started functioning in 1996 at Sishu Bhawan square. Patnaik said the Government plans to set up these two institutions in current financial year to meet the demand for human resources in the hospitality sector.

NEWS | Government allows hotels to import cars and SUVs

In a move that is likely to be cheered by the hospitality sector, government of India has allowed hotels to import cars and SUVs under the Served from India Scheme (SFIS). "I am allowing use of SFIS scrips for import or domestic procurement of motor cars, SUVs, all purpose vehicles for hotel, travel agents, tour operators, companies owning/ operating golf resorts for tourist purposes," Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma. Announcing the supplementary Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) for the fiscal, he said this is being done to encourage export of services, especially in the tourism sector.
