Dan McKeon has been named Resident Manager of the JW Marriott Washington, DC. In his new role, Mr. McKeon reports directly to Satinder Palta, general manager, and functions as the strategic business leader of the hotel’s day-to-day operations. Mr. McKeon comes to the luxurious downtown hotel from the eastern region executive team where he served as the vice president of sales and marketing, providing leadership for over two hundred managed hotels.

Velasquez brings more than 15 years of luxury hotel experience to his new role. Most recently, Velasquez was the director of sales and marketing at the Royal Palms Resort and Spa, where he rebranded the 18 year old boutique resort, restaurant and spa to reach a multi-generational, prosperous audience. Prior to that, Greg served as director of marketing and sales for L’Auberge de Sedona, where he re-positioned the hotel following a USD 25 million renovation, and helped recapture top of mind awareness for Sedona bound luxury travellers.

NEWS | Ahn Luh Inks Management Deal for Hotels in Shanghai and Shaoxing

 
Ahn Luhexpanded its presence in China today with the signing of hotel management contracts with the Qinsen Group. The agreements cover two upscale hotels: Anh Luh Lanting, scheduled to open in fall 2014, and Ahn Luh Zhujiajiao, opening in spring 2015. "Shaoxing and Zhujiajiao are both ancient river towns with arched stone bridges, a warren of canals… Ahn Luh Lanting in Shaoxing will feature historic Hui-style homes that date back as far as the 1600s while the Zhujiajiao project aims to reflect the rich cultural traditions of this ancient water town," said Akira Moreno, Ahn Luh's CEO.

BHC suggested the Maha govt to frame separate rules and regulations under the Food Safety and Standards Act for food service providers.  

The Bombay High Court today suggested the Maharashtra government to frame separate rules and regulations under the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA) for food service providers like hotels and restaurants. A division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice M S Sanklecha was hearing a petition filed by the Association of Indian Hotels and Restaurants ( AHAR), which has over 6000 members, challenging the constitutional validity of FSSA 2006 and the Rules and Regulations framed under the Act in 2011. According to the petitioner association, the provisions of FSSA are not applicable to food service providers like hotels and restaurants as they do not manufacture food.

NEWS | Restaurants to shut shop in protest against service tax

 
Over 27,000 restaurants in the city are likely to remain closed on Monday in response to a call by Indian Hotel & Restaurant Association (AHAR) to protest the imposition of service tax on even partly air-conditioned restaurants in the budget. AHAR's bandh call has also been supported by hotel associations in Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Federation of Hotels and Restaurants Association of India among others.

NEWS | DS Group to invest Rs 875 cr to come up with five hospitality properties

Diversified firm Dharampal Satyapal Group (DS Group) plans to invest Rs 875 crore to come up with five properties in the next three years as it aims to expand its hospitality business across the country. The Noida-based firm, which currently has one five-star property 'Manu Maharani' at Nainital, has already invested around Rs 375 crore on the upcoming five properties. "The total investment marked for the five properties is Rs 875 crore.

NEWS | Restaurants in Gujarat remain closed to protest against newly-levied service tax

 

Most of the over 20,000 restaurants in Gujarat were today shut in protest against newly-levied service tax on air-conditioned eateries. "The one-day strike call has had overwhelming response...almost all 20,000 small and big restaurants in Gujarat remained closed in protest of the 4.94 per cent service tax on AC restaurants," said Aswhin Gandhi of Gujarat State Hotel Federation.

NEWS | Over 25,000 hotels shut down in Tamil Nadu

 
More than 25,000 hotels, restaurants and eateries remained closed today across Tamil Nadu as part of the nation-wide protest against the service tax levied on air-conditioned hotels. Tamil Nadu Hotels Association Secretary R Srinivasan said more than 5,000 hotels in and around Chennai and over 20,000 in other parts of the state were shutdown in response to the one-day strike called by All India Hoteliers Federation.

NEWS | Swosti Group announces foray into hospitality education

 




City-based Swosti Group, one of the premier hotel groups in eastern India, has finally forayed into the hospitality education. The group has announced the launching of its institute- Swosti Institute of Management and Social Studies (SIMSS), affiliated to Utkal University of Culture. The institute which will initially operate on rented premises, will offer seven programmes for hospitality and tourism sectors. The home grown hospitality group envisions that its own campus will be ready before five years. Two courses- a bachelor's degree in tourism and hospitality services and master's degree in tourism and hospitality services will have an intake capacity of 120 students and 60 students respectively. The remaining programmes will be certificate courses to be provided by Swosti Educational Foundation.

The 48th Annual Convention of Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) will be held from September 19 to 21, 2013 at Le Meridien, Kochi. The decision was unanimously taken on April 20, 2013 during the Executive Committee meeting of FHRAI held in New Delhi, informed MD Kapoor, Secretary General of FHRAI.
