InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has signed a new franchise agreement with Airport Hotel Limited that will see the Old Manor House at Plaisance Airport become Holiday Inn Mauritius – Plaisance Airport. NEWS | Subway opens 350th outlet in India

The Subway restaurant chain has opened its 350th restaurant in India in Jalandhar, Punjab. With its first store in Delhi in December 2001, the chain’s plans for India are in line with its growth plans for Asia, with a target of opening more than 3,000 stores by 2017. The Board of Directors of Accor unanimously decided to terminate the Chairman and CEO of the Group Denis Hennequin. The reason given for his ousting was the disagreement over the speed of change in Accor's strategy. “All the Directors came to the joint conclusion regarding the Group’s situation: that the strategy adopted is the right one and that it will remain unchanged. However, given current economic conditions and the rapid transformation of its competitive environment, Accor must accelerate the implementation of this strategy in order to reinforce its positions.

NEWS | Surat restaurants get closure notice over filth

Around half a dozen restaurants and fast-food joints in the railway station and Delhi Gate areas in Surat were asked to shut their shops for not maintaining hygiene in their kitchens and throwing filth on the roads. Official sources said that the health department led by newly appointed deputy commissioner (health and hospital) RJ Patel started an intensive health campaign in the city on Tuesday targeting the restaurants and roadside eateries. The restaurants and food joints like Kamat Tirupati restaurant, Sher-E-Punjab, Vijay Fast food and another food joint were served with closure notices. Around 23 hotels and restaurants and at least 24 roadside eateries were checked in the surprise drive. Health officials said that fine amounting to Rs 83,000 was collected from the offenders.

Bitten by rising food inflation, galloping real estate costs and a slowdown in consumption, India’s food and hospitality industry have stepped up deals and discounts to tempt back foodies who are looking the other way as menu costs have risen around 10 percent in the last year. Retail price inflation rose to a record high of 10.91 per cent in February and economic growth forecast by the government at 5 per cent this fiscal year to March, the slowest in 10 years, has forced consumers in India to watch their spending. NEWS | Cautious outlook for hospitality sector this year

Hoteliers and analysts continue to have a cautious outlook this year on the back of growing political uncertainty ahead of the 2014 elections, economic crisis in key Western nations and oversupply of hotel rooms in certain markets. Kaushik Vardharajan, Managing Director of the hospitality consultancy firm, HVS, said, “In 2013-14, the demand for hotel rooms is expected to see modest growth. While occupancies are expected to be stable, room rates could drop by about 5 per cent.” He said in 2014-15, after there is more clarity in the political situation in the country, the hotel industry could see better growth.
