NEWS | Taj Hotels to add more properties in Sri Lanka

Taj Hotels is looking at expanding its presence in Sri Lanka and their next property on the island country will come up in Trincomalee. “We are looking at a lot of properties to complete the circuit, and looking at like-minded investors,” says Manoj Mathew V. M., General Manager, Vivanta by Taj, Bentota. Trincomalee, the port city has “great beaches”, and a hotel may come up there within a year, he said. The group is eyeing six new hotels, including one in Nuwara Eliya, famous for its tea gardens, and in Kandy, a city of historical and religious significance.

NEWS | Taj Mahal Hotel auction hearing delayed till June 27th

The auctioning of Taj Mahal hotel, Mumbai, will be discussed by the Municipal Council (NDMC) in its next council meeting on June 27. Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), which operates the Taj Mahal hotel, filed an injunction suit in the Delhi High Court against the impending auction after its two-year lease extension comes to an end in October 2013. NDMC has to give its reply to IHCL’s plea in the court on July 18. IHCL, in its plea, has claimed to have equity in the property because of which it cannot be treated as any other lessee. Indian Hotels, in its plea, has cited its long relationship with NDMC for grant of a stay in the auction process.

Throughout his career, Ram has been involved in various aspects of revenue management with leading international hotel groups including pre-opening and set up of operating processes in leisure and business hotels, cluster roles, and central reservations systems.

NEWS | Hotels fail to come up in Vishakapatnam due to government indifference

Government indifference and inability to ensure availability of proposed land that would grow up hotels and resorts proved to be a spoiler to the objective of promoting the coastal city of Visakhapatnam as an international tourist destination. According to the CAG scrutiny reports, non-allotment of full extent of land to the developer, coupled with lack of urgency and initiative in renegotiating DMA by the department has led to the failure of coming up of significant number of hotels in the beach town. The state government had awarded the Bay Park Resorts project to Indo-American Hotels and Resorts (P) Ltd in November 2000 for development in public-private partnership (PPP) as part of a plan to develop Visakhapatnam as an international tourist destination.

NEWS | Starwood Hotels & Resorts Expands Presence in Saudi Arabia with Three New Hotels in Makkah

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE:HOT) has signed an agreement with Jabal Omar Development Company to open three new hotels in the Holy City of Makkah. As part of the Jabal Omar Development project, Starwood will add 1,496 rooms to the city under the company's Sheraton®, Westin® and Four Points® by Sheraton brands when the hotels open in 2015. Starwood currently operates 10 properties in Saudi Arabia, the second largest market for the company in the Middle East behind the UAE.

NEWS | IHG’s Holiday Inn continues to drive growth in the UK

IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) continues to grow its presence in the UK with the signing of three new hotels – Holiday Inn Huntingdon - Racecourse in Cambridgeshire, Holiday Inn Glasgow Green in Scotland and Holiday Inn - Watford Junction in Hertfordshire. The first of the three to open will be Holiday Inn Huntingdon - Racecourse , a 98 room new build due to open its doors in quarter three of 2013. The hotel will operate under a franchise agreement with HP Hotels Limited who also own Holiday Inn Express Nuneaton.

Las Tablas due to open at the beginning of quarter three this year will operate under a franchise agreement with Gestion T3 Hotels who operate four other IHG hotels in Spain. The 133 room hotel is a conversion from an existing hotel, where a renovation project is already under way and is set to provide improved facilities for its guests. Upon completion, the refurbished hotel situated in a new business district in Las Tablas is set to attract domestic and international business travellers, providing guests with a friendly and efficient service.

NEWS | Give relief package to Uttarakhand's hospitality sector: FHRAI

Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) today said the Uttarakhand hospitality and tourism industry should be given a comprehensive relief package in the wake of the natural calamity in the state. "FHRAI makes an urgent appeal to the Union Government and financial institutions to formulate a comprehensive relief package for the state's hospitality and tourism industry, in the form of loan waivers, tax exemptions and subsidies etc.," FHRAI Honorary Secretary Vijai Pande said. This will be vital to allow this key industry to cope with the adverse impact of this 'colossal tragedy' and stand on its feet again, he added. "The economy of Uttarakhand is heavily dependant on tourism as its mainstay.

NEWS | Hotel industry becomes a casualty of slowing economy; check-in rates fall

The hospitality industry is becoming another high-profile casualty of the slowing economy, with nearly 75 big hotels putting up the 'for sale' boards and several others raising the red flag amid falling check-ins and wilting room rates. Most hotels in the country are running half empty, as the GDP growth slips to 5% levels this fiscal year, says the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI). In a preliminary report, the hoteliers' body has found that average hotel occupancy in 2012-13 dropped to the lowest in a decade at 58.3% and average room rates fell to Rs   6,214, the lowest in six years.

NEWS | Shangri-La Hotel, Shenyang to open in August 2013

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts will debut a new five-star hotel in the historic city of Shenyang, which is home to the only other existing royal palace in mainland China after the Forbidden City in Beijing.
