NEWS | Restaurant Performance Index Hits 14-Month High on Positive Sales

Buoyed by stronger same-store sales and customer traffic levels, the National Restaurant Association’s Restaurant Performance Index (RPI) hit a 14-month high in May. The RPI - a monthly composite index that tracks the health of and outlook for the U.S. restaurant industry - stood at 101.8 in May, up 0.9 percent from April and the third consecutive monthly gain. May also represented the third straight month that the RPI surpassed the 100 level, which signifies expansion in the index of key industry indicators. “The May increase in the Restaurant Performance Index was driven by broad-based gains in the current situation indicators, most notably positive same-store sales and customer traffic results,” said Hudson Riehle, senior vice president of the Research and Knowledge Group for the National Restaurant Association.

Hilton Worldwide announced the opening of its 4000th hotel, Hilton Shijiazhuang in the Hebei province of China. NEWS | Savourites Hospitality to add 15 restaurants in India in two years

Savourites Hospitality, which owns popular restaurant chains like 6, Ballygunge Place (for Bengali cuisine) and The Wall (for pan Asian cuisine), is planning to add 15 more restaurants in India, including some in tier-II, tier-III cities within a span of two years. It has almost finalised its next destination, Delhi, they said, followed by Mumbai. “Bengali cuisine, with its delicacy, detailing and diversity, has the potential to come up as India’s national cuisine.

NEWS | 10 hotels lose license after inspection by food safety commissione

Special squads of Food Safety officials from various districts conducted raids on 147 hotels in Thiruvananthapuram and suspended Food Business Operator (FBO) licences of 10 establishments.The raids were conducted following an instruction from Food Safety Commissioner to ensure the 30 guidelines for cleanliness in hotels. A total of 10 eateries lost their licences and were closed down. Around 90 hotels were given improvement notices and a total fine to the tune of Rs 1,13,500 was imposed on 23 hotels. A total of 60 hotels had been closed down following the recent raids and imposed a fine of Rs 4,48,500.
