Langham Hospitality Group announced today it will manage the first new luxury city centre hotel under the Langham Place brand in Haining, a bustling metropolis in the Zhejiang coastal province. The property, which is being developed by Hong Kong-based Mingly Real Estate Corporation, is scheduled to open in 2014. Featuring 266 spacious guest rooms and suites, Langham Place, Haining will be part of an integrated complex comprising a retail shopping centre, commercial offices and residential apartments. Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has announced the appointment of Nejat Sarp as Area General Manager for Turkey with immediate effect. Mr Sarp will be based at Mandarin Oriental, Bodrum which is scheduled to open in 2014. In his position, Mr Sarp will manage both the hotel and The Residences at Mandarin Oriental, Bodrum as well as oversee the development of Mandarin Oriental, Istanbul which is scheduled to open in 2016. A seasoned hotelier, Mr Sarp rejoins Mandarin Oriental with over 30 years of senior global hospitality experience in operations and development. He held the position of General Manager at Mandarin Oriental, Singapore from 2000 to 2004.

The government is planning to allow hotels to build and sell apartments in their complexes in Delhi, a move that may benefit several hotels in the city except those that fall within the restricted Lutyens' Bungalow Zone. Hotels will be allowed to use the 20% of the total built-up space, where they are permitted to set up a commercial and retail wing, to develop apartments, a senior official at the Delhi Development Authority said, on the condition of anonymity.
The Kerala High Court today declared as "unconstitutional" the imposition of service tax on luxury hotels by the Centre by amending the Finance Act. A single bench of Justice A M Shafique passed the order while allowing a batch of petitions filed by the Kerala Classified Hotels and Restaurants Association, challenging the imposition of service tax. The court said that the imposition of service tax by the Centre by amending the Finance Act was beyond the legal competency of Parliament as the subject comes under the state.
The Indian Hotels CompanyBSE 0.21 %, which runs the Taj, Vivanta and Gateway brands of hotels, today said it has reopened its Sri Lanka property, the Vivanta by Taj Bentota, after extensive renovations, which cost it over Rs 65 crore. The 160-rooms Vivanta by Taj Bentota is an exclusive beach and spa resort on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, said its general manager Manoj Mathew in a statement. The property has over 6,500 sqft of indoor and outdoor space for meetings and conferences, he added.

Chesapeake Lodging Trust and Hyatt Hotels Corporation recently announced that the Trust has acquired the fee simple interest in the Hyatt Santa Barbara and two adjoining properties totaling 200 rooms from a Hyatt affiliate for USD 61.0 million, or approximately USD 305,000 per key. The Trust entered into a management agreement with HEI Hotels and Resorts to operate the hotel under a franchise agreement with a Hyatt affiliate. The property comprises the 171-room Hyatt Santa Barbara, the 24-room Parkside Inn and a five-villa apartment building that is currently used for long-term, monthly lease stays.
