Government to woo global chains to set up hotels in Himachal Pradesh

To boost tourism activity and to establish Himachal Pradesh as a leading global sustainable tourism destination by 2029, the state government plans to invite big international hotel chains to invest here. Presence of some big names in the hotel industry would prove a game changer here, tourism industry sources said here.

Though tourism infrastructure has expanded during the last two decades, big hotel chains are staying away from the state, they said. After the initial boom, especially following the rise of militancy in Kashmir valley during early 1990s, tourism infrastructure in the state has witnessed vast expansion and today Himachal Pradesh has 2,377 registered hotels and guest houses with a total bed capacity of 61,236, besides 630 restaurants and 500 registered home-stays. But when it comes to big international names, state does not have enough of them, they pointed out.

Chairing the sixth meeting of Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Board (HPTDB) in Shimla on Saturday, chief minister Virbhadra Singh said that tourism industry contributes 9.75% of gross domestic product (GDP) of the state and it can prove to be a game changer if big international hotel chains invest in the state. "We can facilitate such big hoteliers by either providing them land on lease or by identifying suitable land for them to construct hotels," he added.
