AHMEDABAD: Akram Ayubkhan, 19, a second-year student of Gulabrao Deokar Engineering College in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, is an inspiration and a ray of hope for children in his locality. Akram is the first youngster of Bombay Hotel refugee camp set to become an engineer. The refugee 'hotel' in Ahmedabad is home to 116 riot-affected families who were shifted here after the communal violence of 2002.

Akram was seven when riots erupted in Naroda-Patiya, the site of the worst massacre during the riots. He has faint memories of the mayhem in which 97 people were killed but he does not want to dwell on this dark episode in his life. He is a grown-up youth and wishes to become an engineer so that he can start earning soon.

Akram's mother, Salehabanu, is the driving force behind the change in his life.
