As the number of middle-income families going on domestic vacations and business travellers on a tight budget keeps rising, international hoteliers are rushing in to capture the mid-market segment bridging the gap between luxury and budget hotels in India.
Intercontinental Hotels Group plans to open 19 Holiday Inn Express hotels in India by 2016.
In April this year, the Intercontinental Hotels Group, or IHG, the world'slargest hotel group by number of rooms, signed a 20-year management contract with Duet India Hotels to launch 19 Holiday Inn Express hotels in India by 2016.
It has been busy two months for hotel giant Marriott International. In Bengaluru, it opened three hotels: the country's first Ritz Carlton, a corporate Hotel Fairfield Inn and a JW Marriott.
Hilton Worldwide has signed a multi-unit management agreement with SKS Group to manage two hotels, located in Perth and Fremantle, Western Australia. The hotels will be branded DoubleTree by Hilton and will join Hilton Worldwide's existing portfolio of 20 hotels in Australasia.

Marriott International has become the largest hotel company in Africa according to published information, and nearly doubled its presence in its Middle East and Africa region to more than 160 hotels and 23,000 rooms as it completed its acquisition of the 116-hotel Protea Hospitality Group (PHG), based in South Africa. Marriott now operates or franchises more than 4,000 hotels in 79 countries.
New employment analysis released this week shows tourism to be the major driver of jobs in the UK since the recession. The work, commissioned by VisitEngland the national tourist board and carried out by the Office for National Statistics shows that between September 2009 and September 2013 the number of people working in tourism industries in England rose by 6% equating to 153,000 jobs. Over the same period, the number of people working in other industries grew by just 3%.
Global hospitality player Starwood Hotels & Resorts is planning to bring its luxury brands St Regis and W Hotels to India shortly to meet the expanding demand of the Indian market. With this, Starwood will have eight out of its nine brands in India.

Best Western India will add 10 more new hotels to its fold in India in couple of months. According to Sudhir Sinha, President & COO, Best Western India these hotels will become operational by April-May, 2014 in destinations like Pune, Ambala, Pathankot, Kanpur, Zirakpur, Dehradun, Ooty, Nakhodar, Wayanad, and Dalhousie.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts has announced that Achim Lenders, an industry veteran with 30 years of experience, has joined the company as Vice President, Global Food and Beverage.
