With acquisition of Protea Hospitality Group complete, Marriott becomes largest hotel company in Africa

Marriott International has become the largest hotel company in Africa according to published information, and nearly doubled its presence in its Middle East and Africa region to more than 160 hotels and 23,000 rooms as it completed its acquisition of the 116-hotel Protea Hospitality Group (PHG), based in South Africa.  Marriott now operates or franchises more than 4,000 hotels in 79 countries.

Tourism the dominant driver of UK jobs since the recession

New employment analysis released this week shows tourism to be the major driver of jobs in the UK since the recession.  The work, commissioned by VisitEngland the national tourist board and carried out by the Office for National Statistics shows that between September 2009 and September 2013 the number of people working in tourism industries in England rose by 6% equating to 153,000 jobs.  Over the same period, the number of people working in other industries grew by just 3%.

NHCC receives’Best Mixed-Used Property Hotel’ award at Hotel Build India Awards

Starwood Hotels & Resorts has announced that Achim Lenders, an industry veteran with 30 years of experience, has joined the company as Vice President, Global Food and Beverage. Lenders, who most recently served as Corporate Senior Vice President of Food and Beverage for Hyatt Hotels Corporation, will oversee the alignment and development of Starwood's multi-billion dollar global food and beverage strategy, reporting to John Peyton, Senior Vice President of Global Initiatives.
