TripAdvisor’s Q4 profit soars as stronger-than-expected revenue offsets higher expenses

Like its peers, the travel portal has stepped up advertising spending and offering discounts and loyalty programs in response to increased competition that ranges from travel meta search sites to startups that offer unpublished discounts for hotel stays.

Overall, TripAdvisor reported a profit of $36 million, up from $20.5 million a year earlier. Total revenue rose 35% to $288 million, and total costs and expenses increased 23%. Click-based advertising, which accounts for the bulk of the company’s revenue, rose 25% from the year-earlier period.
