Ayada Maldives resort opens its doors

Ayada Maldives, a new island-based resort covering 150,000sq m (1.6 million sq ft) of land in the Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll to the south of the country, has opened its doors to guests.
Facilities at the 112-villa resort include tha 3,500sq m (37,674sq ft) AySpa and Health Club, which is managed by ESPA; a dive and watersports centre; and seven restaurants.

Abu Dhabi to build new Destination Village

Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) has unveiled its plans for a new specially-designed 55,000sq m (592,015sq ft) Destination Village on the Emirate state's Corniche breakwater.

Caesars Palace to unveil new hotel tower

Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, US, has announced that its sixth hotel tower, the 668-bedroom Octavius Tower, will welcome its first guests from 2 January 2012.
Featuring a private entrance and access to the Garden of the Gods pool and gardens, the new tower marks the completion of a US$860m (£557m, EUR638m) expansion project.Caesars Palace regional president Gary Selesner said: "With very high hotel occupancy over the last six months and the unqualified success of the Augustus Tower, we look forward to offering our guests the new luxury rooms."

Work started on Octavius Tower in 2008 alongside three luxury villas, which were launched in September 2009. November launch for new Maldives spa

A new spa is to be opened at the Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa resort on 1 November under the management the Hyatt Group, which took control of the property earlier this year.
Details of the new facility are yet to be confirmed, although it is anticipated that the spa will draw on traditional Maldivian healing, cleansing and purifying techniques.

The new spa at Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa is also expected to use fresh ingredients that have been sourced from across the island, which is located in the Huvadhoo Atoll.Formerly called Alila Villas Hadahaa, the SCDA Architects-designed resort was rebranded by Hyatt Group on 1 April and comprises two restaurants; a bar; and a fitness centre.

Travelodge reveals £40m Spanish investment

UK-based budget hotel operator Travelodge has continued its expansion into Spain with the launch of its fourth site in Valencia, which forms part of a £40m investment in the country.
The 116-room Valencia Travelodge is sited close to the city's airport and represents a £10m investment by the company, with the remaining £30m going towards a new Barcelona hotel.Work has now commenced on the new ten-storey building that is set to house the 250-room Barcelona Rambla Poble Nou Travelodge, which is due to open in spring 2013.

The latest investment by Travelodge in the Spanish market will expand its portfolio to a total of five hotels, with properties already open in Madrid, Barcelona and Las Rozas.

Marriott reopens flagship New York hotel

Marriott Hotels and Resorts' flagship property on Broadway in New York, US, has relaunched after undergoing a major multi-million dollar renovation programme.

Working with owner Host Hotels and Resorts, the New York Marriott Marquis has received around US$39m (£25.2m, EUR29m) worth of improvements throughout the property.

Washington DC-based interior architecture and design group ForrestPerkins worked on the scheme, which included an overhaul of nearly 2,000 guest rooms.

New additions to the property's facilities include a restaurant and lounge called Crossroads - An American Kitchen Bar and the Broadway Lounge.

The Broadway Ballroom is able to cater for 2,400 guests and boasts a "vanishing ceiling", as well as programmable chandeliers offering colour-changing LED technology.

Mike Stengel, vice president, market general manager for Marriott International, said: "Even though we celebrated the New York Marriott Marquis' 25th anniversary last year, it feels like a brand new hotel opening."

The hotel remained open throughout the renovation project, which is due for full completion in spring 2012.

UK's first Crowne Plaza Resort launches

The new 194-bedroom Crowne Plaza Resort Colchester - Five Lakes, which is the first UK resort to open under the Crowne Plaza brand, has opened to guests for the first time.

Owned by AB Hotels and managed by BDL Management as part of Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG), the new property boasts a swimming pool; a gym; and an on-site spa.

ESPA, Clarins and Jessica Nails supply the resort's spa, which includes 12 treatment rooms and a relaxation room, while a sauna, a steamroom and a spa bath are also available.

Other facilities at the resort include two 18-hole golf courses, three practice putting courses and a floodlit eight-bay driving range, as well as two restaurants and a cocktail bar.

Ben Danielsen, the property's general manager, said: "It is extremely important for us to look at what will make a stay here special for our guests.

"We find that professionals who attend meetings here really appreciate being able to do business and also take advantage of the resort facilities."

Graham Norris, divisional director for BDL Management, added: "The Crowne Plaza brand is incredibly strong which is why we wanted to partner with IHG to open the first Crowne Plaza resort in the UK."

Mayfair hotels secure £50m revamp funding

Crowne Plaza London - St James and 51 Buckingham Gate, Taj Suites and Residences have secured a package worth £50m from Barclays Corporate towards ongoing upgrade work.

The new five-year arrangement will refinance the existing facilities of both properties, which are owned by Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces and will help fund refurbishment projects.

Taj Hotels (Europe) vice president of finance Nagarajan Chandrasekhar said: ""We are pleased to have secured Barclays Corporate's ongoing support in what remains a challenging market, not just for the hotel sector.

"This funding package will enable us to continue to provide our customers with the best possible services and facilities available."

Both properties share the Spa at 51 facility, which is available to guests and day visitors and offers a bespoke treatment range designed by Anne Sémonin.

W London sold to Qatari-based investor

Northern Ireland-based development group McAleer and Rushe has revealed that it has sold the 192-bedroom W London-Leicester Square hotel in a deal worth £200m.

The flagship property, which is operated by Starwood and located on the corner of Leicester Square and Wardour Street, now under the ownership of a Qatari-based investor.

Designed by Jestico + Whiles, the hotel opened in April and comprises the fifth floor Away Spa, which includes five treatment rooms, three private suites and a beauty boutique.

McAleer and Rushe managing director Eamonn Laverty said: "We built a hotel that is instilled with the highest levels of design and exclusivity that one would expect of such a glamorous brand as W and on such a prominent site.

"The funds raised will be reinvested in the business and will assist us in the pursuit of other development opportunities."

Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) and Steerforth Partners advised on the sale. Jon Hubbard of JLL added: "This sale reinforces the international appeal of London for real estate investors, recognising the long term strength of the London hotel market."

Cambria Suites to expand US portfolio

Choice Hotels International (CHI) has revealed plans to expand its Cambria Suites portfolio with new US openings in Houston, Texas; Washington DC; and White Plains, New York.

In White Plains, CHI will be working in partnership with Meyer Jabara Hotels and will lead to a 130-room property forming part of a wider mixed-use scheme on 250 Main Street.

It is anticipated that the construction of the hotel part will get underway in March 2012, with opening scheduled for September 2013.

Elsewhere, CHI is working alongside Concord Hospitality and Roadside Development on a 127-room property in Houston and a 182-room hotel in Washington DC.

Each of the new Cambria Suites hotels will boast the Refresh fitness centre with a pool and a hot tub/spa area, along with its Reflect casual dining option.

Accor Appoints Antoine Recher New Global Chief Human Resources Officer

announced Friday the appointment of Antoine Recher as its Global Chief Human Resources Officer. Recher replaces Anne-Marie Cambourieu and will take office during the month of October.

Most recently, Recher served as Executive Vice President, Human Resources and Social Policy for Servair, which provides catering services to Air France. Accor's statement added that Recher's "knowledge" of Services sector operations would be "of valuable assistance" in transforming the company.

Accor producing "training manual" for owners

French hotel chain Accor is creating a "training manual" for general managers on how to deal with owners.

Laurent Chaudet, general manager of the Pullman Dubai Mall of the Emirates, is involved with the effort, which is intended to ease the culture shock between management styles in different regions.

"We faced a lot of problems sending some GMs from Europe to Asia. The guys were not ready because they used to work in some affiliated franchises. I’ve been personally requested – because I’ve been in Accor for nearly 30 years in the management company – to train our general managers to know how to better deal with the owner’s representatives, particularly in Asia."

Siegfried Nierhaus, managing director for Atlas Group Middle East, applauded the move, saying any move to improve relations between owners and operators can only strengthen the brand.

"This is an excellent initiative and I believe that operators should invest more time and money in training their GMs who are the representatives of the brand. GMs should spend significant time before moving to any new destination to study the new destination and learn about do's and don'ts etc. In this time where the development of our region is continuing to look positive, the success of a brand depends more on the quality of the resources which operators put into place," he said.

Banyan Targets China Residential Opportunities

There is little doubt over the past year the Banyan Tree vis a vie their controlling interest in Thai listed Laguna Resorts and Hotels are looking abroad for greener pastures.

An orderly divestment of key assets namely the Laguna Beach Resort and Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket have been made, and publically the group has said they want to lower their financial exposure in a market ridden with political risk.

Key Banyan Tree executie K.P. Ho has been quoted by Dow Jones Newswires that the group is looking to build upscale houses in China's secondary destinations.

With seven resorts open and more than 20 in the pipeline the group is now keen to shift into property offering as well, with Ho naming Chengdu as a likely example.

Here in Phuket it is no secret that the developer has hit challenging times with a large surplus of completed units that remain unsold throughout the integrate resort.

So for now a shift to China and the soon to launch Laguna Hue in Vietnam increasingly will diversify and expand the groups ambitions

The Ritz-Carlton has signed an agreement with Kanehide, a prominent conglomerate in Okinawa, for the development of The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa, as well as with Sekisui House, Ltd., one of Japan's leading home builders, for the development of The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto.
These two new hotels are in addition to the company's existing hotels in Osaka and Tokyo.

Herve Humler, president and COO of The Ritz-Carlton, said: "We are delighted to have signed not just our first resort in Japan with The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa, but also our first hotel in the culturally rich city of Kyoto. We have waited a long time to develop our brand in Japan and it is wonderful to be able to double our presence in this great country from two to four hotels. The Ritz-Carlton hotels in Tokyo and Osaka have proved the Japanese love affair with the brand and we are excited to be committing to Japan's future as a luxury destination for both business and leisure travelers."

The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa, which will open in April 2012, will also see the award-winning luxury brand appoint its first Japanese General Manager to lead the hotel. Jun Yoshie, who previously worked as The Executive Assistant Manager (EAM) Sales and Marketing at The Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo will lead an experienced team ladies and gentlemen at this wonderful resort property.

Speaking on his announcement Yoshie commented: "I am honoured to have been asked to be the general manager at this iconic hotel in Okinawa. The combination of this great hotel with the excellence and commitment to quality will make this hotel not just a leading property in Japan but a resort to compare with the very best in the world. The stunning Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa will offer 97 luxurious guest rooms with excellent views over a golf course down to the East China Sea, the Motobu Peninsula and beyond to Ie Island. The hotel will be situated within the premises of the Kise Country Club and surrounded on three sides by its 18-hole Championship course overlooking the ocean. The Kise Country Club is bordered by undeveloped wooded land adding to the beautiful setting and location of the resort.

The hotel will replace the existing Kise Bettei Hotel & SPA after an extensive renovation of more than 1 billion yen. The existing property will close in August of this year and reopen as The Ritz-Carlton, Okinawa in April 2012. The new look interiors will be created by ILYA Corporation and the concept of the new hotel will be a combination of The Ritz-Carlton style with the local Okinawan culture to create something subtle and tranquil, yet truly luxurious. The newly renovated hotel will feature three destination dining outlets, as well as a lounge and bar, an ESPA spa and full leisure facilities including a pool and gym.

The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto will offer 136 luxurious guest rooms with an average size of 50 square meters for standard rooms, making them the largest in the city. The hotel will also feature two dining options, banquet and meeting rooms, as well as a spa and will set the benchmark for international luxury hotels in the city.

The hotel will have an excellent strategic location as an urban resort on the Kamogawa River, Nijho Ohashi, close to Kyoto's popular downtown areas including Gion and Kawaramachi-dori, the city's retail and entertainment district. The hotel's guestrooms will offer stunning views of the river and the Higashiyama Mountains.

209 Hospitality Students Receive Scholarships

The American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation (AH&LEF), the not-for-profit affiliate of the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA), awarded 209 scholarships, totaling $297,000, through three of its core programs – the Annual Scholarship Grant, Incoming Freshman Scholarship, and Graduate Scholarship programs.

The Annual Scholarship Grant Program, the Foundation's biggest program, is co-administered with 85 universities and colleges. In 2011, 194 students, nominated by AH&LEF-affiliated schools, received $244,000 in funds. The program is funded from proceeds of the Americas Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS); the Foundation's Annual Giving Campaign; previous AH&LEF capital campaigns, as well as annual special events, including the Big Apple Auction, Golf Classic, and Hospitality Heritage Dinner Tribute, as well as the following scholarship funds:
